Mattias

I wake with a harsh jolt of awareness. Everything smells like Elaine. No, not just her, it smells like my mate mixed with old things. Dust, aged paper, damp earth. I sit up and take in the cement walls, boxes and crates filled with Christmas decorations and who knows what else. A basement. I’m in Elaine’s basement. Fear lances my heart at the thought of what I might have done to her in my desperation.

I rush up the stairs and burst through the door, calling her name without care for politeness. “Elaine! Elaine, where are you?”

She stands in the living room with a mug in one hand, a robe covering her form. “I’m right here. Are you okay?” Her eyes are wide and suspicious. “You look a little better. I guess the walking and talking part helps.”

I don’t have a clue what I look like, but from the tightness in my skin and the gnawing hunger in my belly, I’m sure I’m not the most attractive thing she’s seen. “Thank you. For giving me sanctuary.”

“I wasn’t going to leave you for the sun.”

“And I appreciate that. I shouldn’t have come to you like that. I put you at risk.”

“Because you needed to feed?”

I groan as a wave of hunger hits me. “I still need to. God, Elaine, I could have killed you.”

“But you didn’t. I’m fine.”

“I need to get out of here. You smell so good.” She steps toward me, and I back away. “Stop.” My limbs tremble from the effort of not taking her. “I can’t. I’ll kill you even now.”

“I don’t think you will.”

“Then you’re a fool. So am I. A vampire can’t be mated to a human without eventually killing them. It’s like putting a lion in the same cage as a lamb.”

She laughs, a little harshly. “I’ve heard that analogy before. Vampires and humans. But it looks like humans did a number on you, so maybe the lambs have more strength than you think.”

If I wasn’t dying of thirst I’d laugh. “I can’t stay.” I have to feed or it’ll take me weeks to recover from this, and that’s time I don’t have. Those hunters will be back.

Her gaze travels over my face, down my body, and then back up. “You look like death. You can’t go out like that. Not in this town.”

“What would you have me do?” Frustration rolls through me, but I know she’s right. I can’t use my speed or strength, not when I’m this weak.

“At least shower. I’ve got some clothes that might kind of fit.”

A frown pulls at my brow, making pain flash through my face where those bastards hit me with liquid silver. I’m sure I’m a terrible sight. “Show me where?”

My mate takes me by the hand, her warm, soft palm a welcome sensation. Then she leads me up the stairs where the scent of her is strongest and into what must be her bedroom. If I was at my peak, hell, even if I was at a
