Mattias
I wake with a harsh jolt of awareness. Everything smells like Elaine. No, not just her, it smells like my mate mixed with old things. Dust, aged paper, damp earth. I sit up and take in the cement walls, boxes and crates filled with Christmas decorations and who knows what else. A basement. Iâm in Elaineâs basement. Fear lances my heart at the thought of what I might have done to her in my desperation.
I rush up the stairs and burst through the door, calling her name without care for politeness. âElaine! Elaine, where are you?â
She stands in the living room with a mug in one hand, a robe covering her form. âIâm right here. Are you okay?â Her eyes are wide and suspicious. âYou look a little better. I guess the walking and talking part helps.â
I donât have a clue what I look like, but from the tightness in my skin and the gnawing hunger in my belly, Iâm sure Iâm not the most attractive thing sheâs seen. âThank you. For giving me sanctuary.â
âI wasnât going to leave you for the sun.â
âAnd I appreciate that. I shouldnât have come to you like that. I put you at risk.â
âBecause you needed to feed?â
I groan as a wave of hunger hits me. âI still need to. God, Elaine, I could have killed you.â
âBut you didnât. Iâm fine.â
âI need to get out of here. You smell so good.â She steps toward me, and I back away. âStop.â My limbs tremble from the effort of not taking her. âI canât. Iâll kill you even now.â
âI donât think you will.â
âThen youâre a fool. So am I. A vampire canât be mated to a human without eventually killing them. Itâs like putting a lion in the same cage as a lamb.â
She laughs, a little harshly. âIâve heard that analogy before. Vampires and humans. But it looks like humans did a number on you, so maybe the lambs have more strength than you think.â
If I wasnât dying of thirst Iâd laugh. âI canât stay.â I have to feed or itâll take me weeks to recover from this, and thatâs time I donât have. Those hunters will be back.
Her gaze travels over my face, down my body, and then back up. âYou look like death. You canât go out like that. Not in this town.â
âWhat would you have me do?â Frustration rolls through me, but I know sheâs right. I canât use my speed or strength, not when Iâm this weak.
âAt least shower. Iâve got some clothes that might kind of fit.â
A frown pulls at my brow, making pain flash through my face where those bastards hit me with liquid silver. Iâm sure Iâm a terrible sight. âShow me where?â
My mate takes me by the hand, her warm, soft palm a welcome sensation. Then she leads me up the stairs where the scent of her is strongest and into what must be her bedroom. If I was at my peak, hell, even if I was at a
